In 1945, America won a war and inherited the machine that won it. The factories that had fixed nitrogen for explosives could now turn that nitrogen into fertilizer. The chemistry developed for nerve agents became the chemistry of pesticides. Swords into plowshares — literally.
And it worked. Food got cheap. Astonishingly cheap. A nation that had rationed sugar was suddenly drowning in calories, and in the decades that followed we made it national policy: plant fencerow to fencerow, get big or get out, feed the world.
It was one of the great bargains of the twentieth century. And like most great bargains, nobody read the fine print.
The fine print was this: cheap food would be chemical food. Cheap yield would come from synthetic nitrogen, and pest control would come from poison, and the soil itself would become a substrate — an inert medium you inject inputs into, not a living thing you steward.
Here is what almost nobody understands about that trade. Healthy soil is alive. A single handful contains more microorganisms than there are people on Earth — bacteria and fungi that function as the soil's digestive system. Its gut. They break down organic matter into food that plants can actually absorb, the same way the bacteria in your gut break down your dinner into nutrients your body can use. The chemicals don't just kill pests and weeds. They kill the soil's gut.
Every application of synthetic fertilizer and pesticide wears down the gut of the soil a little more — and soil with a dead gut can't digest anything on its own. It can't feed a plant any more than a body without a microbiome can feed itself. So we compensate the only way dead soil allows: more synthetic inputs, injected directly, bypassing the biology entirely. Which kills more of the biology. Which demands more inputs. It is a vicious cycle by design — the poisons create the dependence on the poisons — and three generations in, vast stretches of American soil are exactly what the machine made them: all but lifeless media that cannot digest food, hooked on the chemistry that killed them.
The rest of the bargain is fully priced in too. The topsoil is thinning. The chemicals are in the water, the food, and obviously they make their way into us. And the knowledge of how to grow anything without the machine has been bred out of the population as thoroughly as bitterness was bred out of tomatoes.
Fast forward to the COVID pandemic, and every American saw the machine break. The shelves went empty. The supply chains snapped. And millions of people, staring at bare produce aisles, had the same quiet realization at the same time: I don't know how to grow anything. I don't know what's in my food. I don't know what's in my soil. I outsourced all of it — eighty years ago, before I was born — and I don't even know to whom.
Part of the problem is what we don't have. We don't have products on the shelf at every garden center that restore microbiological life to the soil. We don't have soil in our yards that gets healthier every year. We don't have a generation that knows how to grow a tomato. Why not?
The harder question is the one almost nobody asks: why does the answer already exist, and you still can't have it?
Because it does exist. Beneficial microbes that feed plants without killing the soil. The patents exist. Biochar that rebuilds soil for centuries. Biological inputs so effective that Fortune 500 agricultural companies spend billions on them and deploy them across millions of commercial acres, right now, today. The science is proven. The products work.
And none of it is for you.
You can't buy it. Not the real thing. The most advanced natural growing science on Earth flows from lab to conglomerate to industrial farm — and stops. What reaches your garage shelf instead is the same synthetic chemistry your grandfather sprayed, in brighter packaging.
Why? The chemical giants won't sell you biologicals because their entire business is built on synthetics — the factories, the margins, the brands. Pivoting means cannibalizing themselves, so they don't. The biologicals companies won't sell to you because you're small, and small is inconvenient, and serving corporations is easier. Both industries looked at a hundred million American households and made the same choice: not worth it.
That's not a market failure. That's a choice.
The problem is will. We need to want clean growing in every yard, every garden, every home — and then we need to demand it, build it, and buy it.
Look at your lawn. If you hired someone to treat it, there's a decent chance they applied something you wouldn't let your kids touch — and then your kids played on it an hour later. Why? Look at your vegetable garden. The "plant food" you bought is synthetic salt that feeds the plant and starves the soil, so you have to buy more of it every year, forever. Why? Look at your food. You drive past farmland getting sprayed on your way to a grocery store where you pay extra for the word "organic" — a premium for the absence of poison. Why is the absence of poison a luxury good?
Look at your nation's soil. American topsoil is degrading decade after decade, and the standard answer is more chemistry — the agricultural equivalent of treating exhaustion with amphetamines. We know how to rebuild soil biologically. We've known for years. Why isn't it in every bag at every store?
You see it everywhere you look, once you start looking. The tools exist. The science exists. The demand exists — ask anyone with a child and a lawn. What's missing is the will to connect them.
To the chemical incumbents: you built remarkable things. You fed the world once — that was the bargain, and you held up your end. But you're defending yesterday's chemistry instead of building tomorrow's biology, and everyone can see it.
To the biologicals industry: you did the hard part. You proved the science. And then you sold it exclusively to corporations and called it a strategy. A hundred million households are waiting. Serving them isn't beneath you — it's the whole point.
To the skeptics who say natural means weak, that biologicals are for hippies, that real results require synthetic chemistry: the commercial growers whose livelihoods depend on yield disagree with you, and they vote with their acres. The science moved. Move with it.
And to everyone who's been told this is out of your hands — that growing is for corporations, that clean is a premium tier, that your job is to consume what the system decides to distribute: it was never out of your hands. Your grandparents grew food in their yards as a matter of course. During the Second World War, ordinary families grew roughly forty percent of this country's fresh vegetables in victory gardens — without a chemical industry, without an app, without permission. Growing things is not a specialist activity. It is the oldest human competence there is. You were just convinced to forget it.
We don't accept that our food must be sprayed, that our soil must die, that our health must be outsourced to industries that optimized us out of the equation. The eighty-year bargain gave us cheap calories, and we can be grateful for it and still say: the terms are up for renegotiation. The science to bring the soil back to life exists. The only thing that ever stood between it and your backyard was the assumption that you'd never ask.
Here is what the machine never advertised: dead soil is not permanently dead. It is dormant. Give the biology back and it wakes up — not in a lab, not in a generation, but in a season, in a raised bed, in one yard where somebody finally decided to stop poisoning it. That is how eighty years of subtraction gets reversed. Not by waiting for the industries that broke the soil to volunteer to fix it. One handful of living soil at a time, in a hundred million backyards, by people who were never supposed to get their hands on the science and took it anyway.
Your grandparents didn't ask permission. Neither should you.
It's time to grow.
